It was my second time to Arizona, but my first time venturing out to hikes and desert attractions. We drove up to Antelope Canyon and hiked down into an immense cavity of layer upon layer of sandstone. Our guide was extremely knowledgable about the creation and preservation of this beautiful slot canyon. I was shocked to learn that monsoons pop up and form the slot. The water floods the canyon and rages through, literally carving out the sandstone. The natural forms, texture and subtle color variations were beautiful from every angle. And then there was the Grand Canyon. I was more than blown away by its vasts size, various sub-climates, and variegation of stone. The natural color palette of both these sites were incredibly inspiring and relate so well to interior design elements. From patterns mimicked in area rugs, to natural cuts of wood on case-goods, to veining in marble pieces, the desert is easily incorporated into anyone’s home. These elements all add to an organic, cozy, lived-in aesthetic that I cannot wait to add to upcoming projects.
